Handel: Our First Musical Celebrity
“Handel: Our First Musical Celebrity” is a program featuring the multi-faceted works of the 18th century’s first musical superstar, George Frideric Handel. With soprano Jennifer Perez, violinist Stephen Redfield, cellist Katie Rietman, and harpsichordist Charlotte Mattax-Moersch, we’ll explore his cantatas, sonatas, opera and oratorio arias, and overtures.
Born in Germany, with an influential trip to Italy at the age of 20 provided by a member of the Medici family, then settling eventually in London where he triumphed as the master of opera, Handel was known throughout Europe and celebrated. His melodic, harmonic, and dramatic genius was influential far beyond the cities where he lived and worked.
We perform on instruments , strings, and bows that would have been the type used in the Baroque era, and try bring to life the way the composer would likely have heard his own music at the time it was composed. Join us for a fun afternoon of Handelian delights!
